Position Description:

We seek a dynamic, extroverted graduate student who is already active on Instagram and/or Facebook who would like to raise awareness about library services and programs on social media and bring more students to the library for inquiry, collaboration, innovation and research. There will be a lot of leeway for creative and humorous content creation. This is a great opportunity for a student who is interested in learning more about communications, public relations, marketing, event planning, library science or filmmaking. The Neil Hellman Library’s mission is to “empower curious minds”. This GA position will excite curiosity about the library’s offerings and ways that the library can meet student needs and encourage use of the library as a central site of dialogue, intellectual growth, campus community, information literacy and critical thinking skills.

Librarians at the Neil Hellman Library provide one-on-one instruction at the point of need at the reference desk all the hours that the library is open. However, we know that many students feel intimidated about approaching a librarian for help.

We believe that a strong social media presence will encourage our students to view the library as a comfortable space, and to view librarians as approachable. By connecting with students in social media we hope to convey the message that librarians helpful, not scary and that the library is the place to be when doing homework or studying.

We would like to increase library use overall. Seeing images of classmates and friends studying in the library on social media may bring more students to use the library. We believe students who come to the library to do homework and study are more likely to succeed in their coursework, and this may help with student retention. It is possible that a well-crafted library Instagram and Facebook presence would be attractive to potential student admissions as well.

The Library also organizes programs and events that foster many of the goals of the College’s Strategic Plan. For example:

Over the next year I will be continue the work on two research projects.

Economic impact of addressing mental health issues in schools – research will look at the economic impact of promoting positive mental health within the schools. Currently, economic pressures upon schools has caused the terminiation of mental health service providers within public schools. By decreasing the number of providers, it is hypothesized that there will be an increase in negative behaviors within the classroom which would take away from academic time. Further, working parents will have to take additional time off to address and/or pay for mental health services outside of the school buildings. How much of a larger economic impact mental health provision in the schools is not known, but several studies have indicated that early intervention saves billions in later health care. The research will be presented at state and national conferences and be designed for publication in a journal. The GA has to do significant literature review, assist with writing, and discussing various issues with other educational and economic experts.

Choosing your School Psychology Program- This is a follow up research study that the School Psychology Dept completed completed in which surveys were distributed to first year school psychology students in September to find out the reasons for choosing their respective programs. The study included 15 programs from around New York, with 269 students responding to the survey. The study found differences between those attending downstate and upstate programs, gender, ethnicity, and doctoral versus specialist level. A similar survey will be completed this Fall, with all previous programs indicating their interest in revisiting the survey and participating.

Position Description:

The Saint Rose PACE (Planning & Academic Coaching for Educators) program in the School of Education (SOE) supports students, who are struggling academically, develop the knowledge necessary to succeed in college.  Participants are nominated by SOE faculty and our Dean (e.g., <2.75 GPA).  During a weekly class (SED 191 and 591), students who are successful (hereafter referred to as “tutors”) coach their peers who are struggling (hereafter referred to as “scholars”) in the behaviors necessary to achieve strategy knowledge, attain goals, and increase self-efficacy.  These self-regulation skills include planning and prioritizing (i.e., deciding on a goal and a plan to meet it), time management (i.e., knowing what to do and when to do it to meet deadlines), and task initiation (i.e., starting projects without procrastination or avoidance).  The goal is to increase retention and graduation rates at the College of Saint Rose with an emphasis on preparing future educators.

Both quantitative and qualitative data are collected to investigate the effects of PACE on these students’ ability to independently engage in self-regulation and experience academic success.  These data are reported to the Dean of the School of Education each semester and include the following measures:

  1. Study Skills checklist pre-/post-test to assess growth in academic strategies (i.e., managing time and planning, avoiding distractions, notetaking, reading for understanding, testtaking, and writing papers)
  2. Overall pre-/post-semester grade point average for both tutors and scholars
  3. Previous and current semester GPA for scholars
  4. Attendance and adherence to self-regulation strategies at each weekly session
  5. End of semester interviews and transcription to triangulate and determine trends

Data analyses demonstrate positive results (i.e., increased GPA, improved study skills, and better organizational abilities), which aligns with the College’s strategic plan to improve retention and graduation rates and promote student success.

For the PACE tutoring program, the GA coordinates tutoring sessions, teaches study skills, and manages data collection procedures. In addition to data analysis, this person engages in the one-to-one coaching sessions by tutoring students, as needed, in the areas of self-monitoring and organization to facilitate their abilities to evaluate a learning situation, maintain systems to track information and materials, and make adjustments as needed so that they can complete and turn in assignments in a timely manner.

Position Description:

The Graduate Assistant assigned to the Department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) will serve as a technology liaison and expert for the department faculty. For the past few years, the WLC faculty has been implementing a new comprehensive plan: move culture to the center of every foreign language class, focus on proficiency over form and, promote life-long learning. Both the emphasis on culture and life-long learning are being accomplished through the use of technology in and out of the classroom. The full time faculty began using culture blogs in their classes in the Fall 08 semester. In the Spring 09 semester, the call went out to adjuncts in the department to also make use of this tool. In Fall 15, the department began the use of Wevideo and will also move to encourage all faculty to use this digital video editing tool for class assignments.

Last but not least, WLC is participating actively in the College-wide assessment initiative, which requires significant technical support–in particular for new instructors–for learning how to use Chalk&Wire and how to connect it with Blackboard. Due to the constant turnover in the adjunct population, the department must provide ongoing training to its faculty.

Additionally, the department’s graduate assistant will work with faculty members, enhancing their use of technology options. The Department of World Languages and Cultures has also embraced hybrid course delivery. All full-time faculty members now offer hybrid courses, using Blackboard and textbooks with electronic platforms. Several adjunct faculty members have also embraced hybrid course delivery.

Educational/Professional Development:

Since 2005-6, the Department of World Languages and Cultures has employed a graduate assistant for very similar work details. All of our graduate assistants have been successful in aiding both adjuncts and full time faculty in working with technology and smart classrooms. Students have also benefited from the graduate assistants’ expertise, in several class visits. It was the department’s experience over the past few years that knowledge of a language other than English was not critical. The more valuable skills needed were a familiarity with current and breaking technology, in particular electronic platforms used for teaching and assessment, like the ones mentioned above. The GA will have the opportunity to work behind the scenes with Blackboard, Chalk&Wire, and Wevideo. These will be valuable skills for anyone in Educational Technology or Education. Individual work with faculty will also provide opportunities to develop interpersonal skills.
